Office Purchase

Published: 10th March 2017

Local Government reorganisation in 1972 resulted in all Urban, Parish and Rural District Councils being taken over by the larger authorities. In Wivenhoe's case, Colchester Borough Council absorbed all of Wivenhoe Urban District Council's assets - this included the council offices, yard, public toilets and car park.

Late in 2013, Colchester Borough Council offered an unrestricted transfer of the toilets and car park back to the possession of Wivenhoe Town Council. This proposed transfer came with liabilities and the Town Council sought to balance these. Thus started negotiations to buy back the Council Offices and yard.

Prolonged legal issues delayed the purchase. These have now been overcome and the council has successfully acquired ownership of its offices and yard in the High Street. We have also accepted the transfer of the public toilets and car park as part of the deal.

Acquiring the plot completes a long term ambition for us. The adjoining former Police Station and William Loveless Hall are already in town council ownership and the image for a civic centre for Wivenhoe is beginning to take shape.

Town Mayor, Cllr. Asa Aldis said “Wivenhoe now has ownership of its Civic Centre thanks to the efforts of a few industrious and ambitious councillors. This is tremendous news as it allows us to determine our own destiny. We have also secured the future of our public conveniences which were due for closure. This is a great day for the town council and I am delighted to be able to share this news’.
